Commented glossary for rheumatic spinal diseases, based on pathology
Article Abstract:
Standardized terminology use related to spinal rheumatic diseases may be helpful in eliminating confusion and in communicating useful information among the medical and research communities. Researchers compiled a word list of common terms used in spinal rheumatic disease research and medical practice. A definition and comments about the term accompany each entry. Some entries may include a historical background about the term, accepted synonyms, translations, or recommended or proposed usage of the term. The common usage of some terms has departed from their Greek origins. For example, the word ankylose now refers to fusion of a joint instead of curvature. New concepts may warrant new terminology only if the use of conventional terminology is inaccurate.

Effects of anti-rheumatic herbal medicines on cellular adhesion molecules
Article Abstract:
The mechanism by which some herbal medicines reduce inflammation may be the targeting of endothelial cellular adhesion molecules and also those of leucocytes. In testing Tripterygium Wilfordii Hook-f (TWH-f) and Tetrandine, endothelial cells, synovial fibroblasts and human neutriphils were each incubated with varying concetnrations of TWH-f with or without interleuken 1. TWH-f had a significant effect inhibitin secretion and expression of cellular adhesion molecules. The tetrandine did not have as marked an effect.
