Common dermatoses
Article Abstract:
Primary care physicians treating women need to be familiar with common skin diseases, as a majority of dermatologic visits are made by women. Pigmented birthmark lesions, benign skin tumors, and premalignant and malignant skin cancers such as actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma are all discussed. Fair-skinned people who freckle and burn have an increased risk of skin cancer and should protect themselves from the sun. Tretinoin may enhance the sun's effects, so tretinoin users should also use sunscreens. Birthmarks that begin to grow abnormally can be biopsied to determine if they have become malignant. Skin cancer has a cure rate of 90% or better if diagnosed early.
