Listerine Antiseptic mouthwash appears to be more effective than Colgate Total toothpaste in reducing dental plaque and preventing gingivitis. The mouthwash should still be used in combination with toothbrushing and flossing.

Anticalculus efficacy of an antiseptic mouthrinse containing zinc chloride
Article Abstract:
A mouthwash that contains zinc chloride is effective in reducing the amount of plaque on teeth, according to a study of 334 patients. The mouthwash contains 0.09% zinc chloride and reduced plaque formation by 21%.
