Comparison of T-cell subsets' reconstitution after 12 months of highly active antiretroviral therapy initiated durign early versus advanced states fo HIV disease
Article Abstract:
HIV patients are more likely to recover their immune function if they begin antiretroviral therapy soon after they are diagnosed. This was the conclusion of a study of 18 HIV patients with early infection and 20 with advanced infection.

Pulmonary infiltrates in HIV-infected patients in the highly active antiretroviral therapy era in Spain
Article Abstract:
Many HIV patients still develop lung infections even though they are taking highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The most common infections are bacterial pneumonia, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and tuberculosis.

Predictive factors influencing peak viral load drop in response to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors in antiretroviral-naive HIV-1-infected patients
Article Abstract:
Drug-induced viral load suppression in HIV patients not previously treated with antiretroviral drugs appears to be associated with initial viral load, CD4+ white blood cell count, and the number of drugs used. Researchers evaluated drug therapy with one or two antiretroviral medications in 169 patients infected with HIV. Viral loads in the blood dropped below detectable levels in 29% of patients, an outcome 16 times as likely in patients treated with two drugs simultaneously. Viral suppression was more substantial when the initial CD4+ counts and viral load levels were high.
