Comparison of body composition methods: a literature analysis
Article Abstract:
Some methods of assessing body-composition tend to underestimate or overestimate percentage body fat against underwater weighing (UWW), and the difference between UWW and all other methods is dependent on the study. Fifty-four studies were reviewed and the division for analysis made by regression equation, tracer, instrument or model. Assessment methods included the 4-component model, near-infrared interactance, isotope dilution, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, bioimpedance, dual-energy photon absorptiometry and skinfolds methods.

Tetrapolar body impedance is influenced by body posture and plasma sodium concentration
Article Abstract:
A study was done to determine the effects of body posture and plasma sodium concentration on body resistance. Body resistance measured by tetrapolar body impedance increased with recumbency which was attributed to a shift in interstitial fluid to intravascular space. Body resistance decreased with infusion of 5% saline or 20% mannitol. Therefore, in measuring body resistance, standardization must be done for posture and plasma sodium concentrations to avoid errors.

Body fatness and bioelectrical impedance in non-obese pre-menarcheal girls: Comparison to anthropometry and evaluation of predictive equations
Article Abstract:
Non-obese, pre-menarcheal girls were assessed to determine if bioelectrical impedance (BIA) can predict body fatness better than triceps skinfold (TSF) or body mass index (BMI). Equations for determining fat-free mass (FFM) were also cross-validated. It was concluded that BIA is a valid and reliable measure of FFM, but predicts body fat no better than TSF.
