Complications of midtrimester pregnancy termination: the effect of prior cesarean delivery
Article Abstract:
Prior cesarean delivery may increase the odds of complications of a second trimester abortion. Of 606 women having an abortion in the second trimester, 13% had a prior cesarean. In women with a prior cesarean, 11% needed a blood transfusion versus 5% of women with an intact uterus, or more than 2 times the odds, and 4% versus 0.2% experienced a ruptured uterus, or 21 times the odds. It is likely that the culprit is the need to use stronger drug dosages to accomplish labor than would be needed at full-term.

Laminaria versus extra-amniotic saline solution infusion for cervical ripening in second trimester labor inductions
Article Abstract:
Laminaria japonicum appears to be more effective than extra-amniotic saline solution infusion for softening the cervix in pregnant women who must be delivered before term. The cervix must be softened so it can expand and allow the baby to pass through.

Cardiovascular effects of intravaginal misoprostol in the mid-trimester of pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Misoprostol does not appear to have any adverse effects on a pregnant woman's heart. This is important because this drug is used to induce labor. It is a synthetic form of prostaglandin, which can have powerful effects on the body.
