Effect of disease modifying agents on the lipid profiles of patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
Consideration should be given to the effects of anti-rheumatic drugs on a patient's lipid profiles. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have a much higher risk of coronary artery disease than the general population. Blood lipid levels are a good indicator of this risk. Oral hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and gold injections were tested in 100 patients with rheumatoid arthritis over a one-year period. The patients taking HCQ had a marked improvement in their lipid levels, implying a decrease in their risk of coronary artery disease. Gold injections tended to worsen lipid levels.
