Contraception and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Latina Women With Prior Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Article Abstract:
Hispanic women with a history of gestational diabetes should not take progestin-only birth control pills. Gestational diabetes is diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. Researchers followed 443 Latina women with prior gestational diabetes who began using a non-hormonal form of contraception, a low-dose estrogen-progestin combination or a progestin-only pill. Twenty-six percent if the women on a progestin-only pill developed type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes, compared to 10% of the women using estrogen-progestin and 9% of the women using non-hormonal contraception.
