Unwanted pregnancies: understanding contraceptive use and benefits in adolescents and older women
Article Abstract:
Oral contraceptives (OCs) provide effective, reversible contraception for both older women who are delaying childbearing and younger, sexually active teens. OCs also provide some protection from the development of cancers of the ovaries, breast and lining of the uterus. Women who have no or few children are at increased risk for these cancers. Concerns about long-term OC use leading to an increased risk of cardiovascular problems in women older than 35 years appear to be unfounded. Women older than 35 who smoke, however, should use an alternative method of contraception. OCs often relieve other symptoms associated with menstruation in both adolescents and older women. These symptoms include painful periods, extremely heavy periods and irregular bleeding. Women in non-monogamous relationships should also use barrier methods, such as condoms, to lessen the chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases.

Characteristics of successful claims for payment by the Florida Neurologic Injury Compensation Association Fund
Article Abstract:
It appears that only a few of the claims paid by Florida's Birth Related Neurological Injury Compensation Plan are related to nonstandard birth care. However, some of these injuries may have been related to efforts aimed at lowering the cesarean rate. Researchers analyzed the health records of 64 infants born with impaired neurological function whose families later received compensation under this plan. Doctors delivered nonstandard care during eight of these births. There was meconium in 45% of the infants' amniotic fluid. These infants developed abnormal heart rates most frequently during labor. Four infants had blood infections.
