Trends in the supply of medical personnel in the Russian Federation
Article Abstract:
The emergence of private medical practice in Russia may increase the demand for highly-qualified doctors. In the past, the Soviet Union emphasized the number of doctors practicing rather than their qualifications. Between 1985 and 1989, the number of physicians grew but there were regional disparities in the supply of physicians. The number of medical students finishing medical school declined between 1985 and 1989 and the number of physicians began to fall after 1989. Physicians have also become more equally distributed although there are still substantial regional variations outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Graduate medical education and physician supply in New York State
Article Abstract:
New York State may have a surplus of physicians in the future. Analysis of data on residents in the state reveal that the number of residents rose by 21% between 1988 and 1994. New York State trained 15% of all US residents in 1994. In 1994, almost half the residents in the state were graduates of foreign medical schools. Their numbers increased more than 66% between 1988 and 1994. Many will probably remain in the US. The physician-to-population ratio in New York State was higher than the national average. However, many urban and rural areas have physician shortages.
