Controversial FDA overhaul advances in Congress
Article Abstract:
Several bills to reform the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are either under consideration in Congress or under development. The controversial measures are generally designed to speed approval of new products, relying more heavily on the private sector. Some proponents believe that the US is an international backwater in terms of access to new technology. Opponents believe that giving the private sector too much power could circumvent important FDA health safeguards and ultimately harm patients' health.
