Courage in the face of crisis
Article Abstract:
A pilot study by Brent Sickle Cell Centre on sickle cell disease, a type of anaemia which occurs in Arabs, Mediterreans, Asians, Africans and Afro-Caribbeans, and its effects on families, has shown that families need emotional and financial support to cope with the disease. It was found that there is a lack of information about the disease and a lack of counselling, and that mothers would like to be informed earlier about the risks and its diagnosis. Parents can display varying emotional reactions, including guilt that their children are suffering from the disease.
