Court rejects anencephalic organ donation, ethical debate continues
Article Abstract:
The Florida Supreme Court ruled against the parents of Theresa Ann Campo Pearson, an anencephalic baby, on Nov 12, 1992. The parents had sought to donate the baby's organs for transplantation shortly after birth but were prevented from doing so because the baby was not dead under the state's definition. Although she was born missing a large portion of her brain, her heart was beating and she could breathe on her own. The baby died nine days after birth, but most of her organs could not be saved by that time. The American Medical Assn opposes this sort of transplantation, and it is illegal in every state.

Cutting the CLIA hassle: advisory panel would ease regulation of physician-done tests
Article Abstract:
The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee, a federal agency, has agreed to set aside a category of simple, physician-performed tests that would be exempt from government regulation. The tests must meet a number of conditions to be included in this waived category. For example, the tests must be performed by a physician, specimens must be difficult to transport, and no specimen processing or staining may be required.
