Creating an integrated delivery system: keys to success

Hospital administrators and physicians should cooperate as much as possible when forming an integrated health-care delivery system. The two parties should start by agreeing upon a set of substantial, realistic, specific goals. Both groups should hire attorneys to help them through the process of setting up the system, which takes four to six months. The doctors should have strong leadership and unity, while the hospital should recognize physician expertise in certain business issues.

Hospitals buying practices - it does not compute
Article Abstract:
Hospitals want to fill beds while health care plans want to cut costs, and since the two goals are mutually exclusive, it does not make sense for hospitals to be forming "community-based care networks" by buying physician practices. Hospital billing practices, less motivation for physicians to work hard, and other changes brought by managed care and other integration are discussed and problems with the whole concept analysed.

Information management key to future operating room
Article Abstract:
Hospital administrators, in the era of healthcare cost consciousness, are viewing operating rooms more as cost centers than as money makers. Panelists meeting in Nov 1995 to discuss information technology's impact on surgical care agreed that better management of surgical resources is necessary, in order to both save money and maintain care quality.
