Lessons from US history of drug use
Article Abstract:
A traveling museum exhibit may provide insights into how Americans can deal with drug addiction. Drugs have always been a part of American culture and America has vacillated between tolerance and prohibition. Tobacco and rum were both used as currency in the early colonies. Liquor could be produced from grains and sold at a substantial profit. Opiates were a part of many patent medicines in the 19th century. Throughout American history, drugs were used to stigmatize many ethnic groups. This allowed Americans to ignore the social and economic issues underlying drug abuse.

HOPE springs eternal for medical and health volunteers in 29 countries on 5 continents
Article Abstract:
Project HOPE has expanded far beyond its 1958 beginnings, when it established the first non-military hospital ship. The foundation has set up centers in 29 countries to develop health care systems that meet the needs of local populations. Volunteers with Project HOPE's Preventive Dentistry Program have taken the lead in training China's 10,000 dentists. The program, which was established in 1984, teaches the dentists how to train their colleagues. The foundation also donated $54 million in medical supplies and equipment to various countries in 1995.
