Curbing federal Medicaid involvement; shift to states may increase efficiency - or costs
Article Abstract:
Cutting and shifting the annual cost for the Medicaid program could be a major goal for the Republican-controlled Congress. The program currently costs $124 billion, and the cost is rising 11% each year. Medicaid advocates believe that drastic changes could affect the poor and disabled detrimentally because their access to medical care would be more limited. These advocates also believe that federal cuts and cost shifting could ultimately be more costly to taxpayers than if the Medicaid program were left untouched.

Should private sector review medical products?
Article Abstract:
Congress is considering implementing third-party reviews for medical product-approval applications. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would be required to turn over approval applications which had exceeded statutory deadlines to third-party reviewers under a plan passed by the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee. Product-approval applications would be reviewed by FDA-accredited third-party reviewers under a plan introduced in the House.
