Deadly souvenir
Article Abstract:
Nurses at a UK hospital used known methods to prevent the spread of infection when a patient suffering from diphtheria was admitted. This communicable disease is very uncommon in the UK. It affects the respiratory tract, causing the formation of a membrane which can lead to death through obstruction. Medical staff removed the membrane and the patient recovered. Infection controls used included admission to a single room and the wearing of gloves, mask and an apron by anyone entering the room.
