Denial: a symptom of addiction
Article Abstract:
Hilary Wheat responds to Michael Brookes' article by saying that although Brookes refers to models of good practice, this is not evident across the country and there are no national guidelines for doctors. Wheat still maintains that methadone prescription deters addicts from coming off drugs altogether and that it encourages dependency. She refers to research carried out by the Office of National Statistics, which shows that in 1994 there were 191 methadone-related deaths compared to 51 from taking heroin. Wheat still believes that drug treatment policies need to be changed.

Stepping out
Article Abstract:
A former member of a traditional mental health care team, founded a centre to offer a different form of treatment for people with emotional illnesses. She felt that traditional methods were failing patients. Methods at the Tukes Centre, Aberystwyth, UK, are based on the Minnesota model of treatment, which is based on the widely-used 12-step programme for self-help. Patients attend a 12-16-week course of treatment followed by fortnightly group meetings. They work on admitting and accepting their problem and on fulfilling their need to relate to others.
