Delegates advance AMA reform strategy
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) House of Delegates maintained its reform strategy, resisting conservative opposition, but failed to build a consensus on the pace of reform. Although the house expressed its desire to avoid confrontation, it fiercely opposed price controls and did not rule out possible legal action to defend physicians' income. The house raised the recommended minimum benefits package and referred proposals on individual-based insurance and physician bargaining groups to the AMA Board of Trustees for consideration.

New conservative Dem bill; reform chances over for '92
Article Abstract:
The Conservative Democratic Forum, a group of influential legislators, is sponsoring a bill to pressure health providers and insurance companies to organize in managed competition. The plan, similar to that suggested by the Jackson Hole Group, calls for regional purchasing cooperatives and large businesses to select from approved plans whose rules would be regulated by a national health board. Critics of the plan cite the need for more cost control.

House advances MSA bill; Senate eyeing changes
Article Abstract:
The House Ways and Means Committee has drafted proposals which grant a tax-free status to medical savings accounts (MSA). The MSA provision is expected to be part of the budget reconciliation bill. About 61% to 75% of employees could save money by using MSAs, but older and sicker employees could pay more if they used MSAs.
