Delivery of confidentiality assurances to adolescents by primary care physicians
Article Abstract:
Doctors may either neglect to discuss confidentiality with their adolescent patients or incorrectly promise unconditional confidentiality. Researchers conducted a mail survey of 786 board-certified doctors in California specializing in family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, or pediatrics. Doctors said they discussed confidentiality with about half (53%) of their adolescent patients. Female doctors were more likely to discuss confidentiality. Sixty-four percent of doctors incorrectly promised unconditional confidentiality. Doctors should be better informed about legal guidelines regarding the limits of confidentiality for adolescent patients.

Relationship between cigarette smoking and health risk and problem behaviors among US adolescents
Article Abstract:
Cigarette smoking in adolescents appears to be part of a cluster of risky health behaviors and behavior problems. Overall, 10,645 youths responded to a national survey. White teenaged boys who smoked were nearly four times more likely to report marijuana use, twice as likely to report binge drinking, and 40% more likely to report fighting. White teenaged girls, black and Hispanic teenagers had similar associations with smoking. Having multiple sex partners, using smokeless tobacco, not wearing bicycle helmets, and carrying weapons were also associated with smoking within various gender and racial subgroups of the overall population.
