Demand for alcohol treatment by problem drinkers
Article Abstract:
Differences between problem drinkers in the general population and problem drinkers who seek treatment indicate that age, divorce, unemployment and disability help to bring about a high demand for treatment. In The Netherlands, data obtained from structured interviews with problem drinkers participating in out- and inpatient treatment programs were compared with data from 153 problem drinkers in a general population survey. The impact of age, marital status and other factors should persuade alcohol treatment personnel to address the problems in social life that make alcohol abuse more likely.

Essay on spirituality
Article Abstract:
Former alcoholics and clinicians have testified to the effectivity of Alcoholics Anonymous' (AA) alcohol recovery programs. The first three steps of its 12-step program state that alcoholics have no control over their lives and no human power can cure their alcoholism. It is only through the help of God that alcoholics can maintain their sobriety. This shows that spirituality plays an important part in AA's activities because strong spiritual lives help alcoholics to accept themselves. AA stresses that self-acceptance is a key element for the rehabilitation of alcoholics.

Differences between alcoholics and spouses in their perceptions of family functioning
Article Abstract:
The degree of agreement between alcoholics and their spouses or spouse equivalents on their perceptionsof various dimensions of family functioning is assessed using the Family Assessment Device. Results showed that patients and their spouses only had at the most little agreement on the behavior control and affective involvement scales with moderate agreements on the affective responsiveness, communication, problem solving, roles, and general functioning scales. Thus, functioning of alcoholic household is often problematic due to mismanagement of important tasks.
