Deoxyribonucleic acid analysis facilitates the pretreatment identification of high-risk endometrial cancer patients
Article Abstract:
Certain types of DNA analysis may be used to identify endometrial cancer patients with a high risk of cancer metastasis and relapse. Endometrial cancer is cancer of the lining of the uterus. Different types of DNA analysis were performed on specimens of endometrial tissue from 140 patients with endometrial cancer who had not yet undergone treatment. Clinical staging identified 26 patients (19%) with advanced disease. Forty-six percent of the patients with advanced disease had non-diploid DNA, 69% had a S-phase fraction of 9% or more and 69% had a proliferative index of 14% or more. A recurrence of endometrial cancer occurred in 30 patients, and 24 patients died of the disease. Non-diploid DNA was found in the pretreatment specimens from 50% of the patients who suffered a recurrence and 54% of the patients who died. An increased risk of cancer recurrence or death was also associated with a S-phase fraction of 9% or more and a proliferative index of 14% or more.

Flow-cytometric analysis of deoxyribonucleic acid content in advanced ovarian carcinoma: its importance in long-term survival
Article Abstract:
Flow cytometric analysis of DNA content in advanced ovarian tumors may yield predictive information about disease progression. Researchers analyzed the DNA index and DNA cell ploidy of tumors from 282 advanced ovarian cancer patients. Aneuploidy of DNA and high DNA indices were not associated with worse outlooks. The DNA index could be used to predict survival; an index of 1.3 may be used as a cutoff point. DNA cell ploidy may predict how much of the tumor contains abnormal DNA.
