Detection of hepatitis C virus antibodies and specific hepatitis C virus ribonucleic acid sequences in cord bloods from a heterogeneous prenatal population
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women infected with hepatitis C may be found in various socioeconomic groups and their fetuses may be at risk of acquiring hepatitis C from them. Researchers analyzed umbilical cord blood samples from 1,432 newly delivered infants for the presence of hepatitis C virus antibodies. Forty-seven (3.2%) samples contained hepatitis C virus antibodies, and three of these samples were also positive for HIV. Nineteen percent of the samples with hepatitis C virus antibodies had high levels of virus, which may increase the infant's risk of acquiring hepatitis C. Women with hepatitis C antibodies had a higher rate of cesarean section delivery. The presence of hepatitis C infection among pregnant women may indicate a need for prenatal treatment to prevent transmission to fetuses.

The genetic implication for preceding generations of the prenatal diagnosis of interrupted aortic arch in association with unsuspected DiGeorge anomaly
Article Abstract:
A prenatally diagnosed defect in a fetus led to the diagnosis of an undetected genetic disorder in the mother. The fetus was diagnosed with interrupted aortic arch with a ventricular septal defect by echocardiography. The 28-year-old mother had congenital heart disease, but had not been diagnosed with DiGeorge anomaly. DiGeorge syndrome is incomplete development of the thymus and parathyroid glands, and is associated with heart defects. The genetic karyotype for DiGeorge syndrome was found in both the mother and fetus. The mother was advised that both her and her daughter carried a 50% risk of passing the DiGeorge phenotype on to their children.
