Determining the clinical course and outcome in chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Article Abstract:
Researchers have discovered a potential blood test that can identify patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia who have a good prognosis. It is based on a protein called zeta-chain-associated protein 70, or ZAP-70. Patients who have high levels of this protein in their blood have a poor prognosis whereas those who have low levels have a good prognosis. Researchers may also be able to create treatments based on this discovery.

ZAP-70 expression as a surrogate for immunoglobulin-variable-region mutations in chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Article Abstract:
The amount of ZAP-70 protein in leukemia cells from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia can be used to determine their prognosis. If at least 20% of the leukemia cells produce ZAP-70, the patient will have a poor prognosis. If less than 20% of the leukemia cells produce ZAP-70, the patient will have a good prognosis. This was the conclusion of a study of 56 patients.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Article Abstract:
Chronic Lmphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is viewed as two related entities that originate from antigen-stimulated mature B lymphocytes, which either avoid death through the intercession of external signals or die by apoptosis, only to be replenished by proliferating precursor cells. The Chronic Lymphocytic cells resemble the activated B- Lymphocytes.
