Directly observed preventive therapy: turning the tide against tuberculosis
Article Abstract:
Directly observed treatment at a school-based clinic appears to be an effective way to ensure that tuberculosis-positive students complete therapy. Among 864 students at an inner-city high school, 161 students had positive skin tests, but no active disease as revealed on chest X rays. Of these, 105 took preventative medication in the school-based clinic and 22 were referred to the Department of Health. Nearly 90% of students attending the school clinic group completed their full course of therapy versus half of the Department of Health group. School-based treatment is also cost effective.
