The Contributions of Authors
Article Abstract:
The editors of JAMA have decided to require all authors of manuscripts submitted for publication to state the contribution they made to the manuscript. Several other medical journals have taken this step and the results have been positive. It is done partly to make authors accountable for the contribution they made and to eliminate ghostwriting and honorary authorship. A list of contributions has been published, which will be incorporated into a simple checklist for authors to use.

Disclosure to the reader of institutional review board approval and informed consent
Article Abstract:
Biomedical research journals should not publish any study involving humans that did not meet the ethical guidelines for informed consent stated in the Declaration of Helsinki. A 1997 review of 102 biomedical research journals found that over half did not require authors to state whether their research followed the guidelines. Even when the journal editors do require such a statement, it is not always included in the published study as a benefit to readers. The Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals should also be amended to require this information.

When authorship fails: a proposal to make contributors accountable
Article Abstract:
A proposal is discussed to change the nature of authorship in the publication of scientific papers. Many papers have multiple authors, each possibly responsible for specific tasks. However, some people listed as authors actually may have contributed very little to the research. In addition, some authors are not willing to take responsibility for the paper as a whole. The term author should be replaced by contributor, and thereby each contributor could list his or her contribution. One contributor might agree to assure the integrity of the entire paper.
