Doctor plans need strategies to compete, house told
Article Abstract:
Physicians who join together to form a health plan must figure out how to obtain money for start-up costs and other expenses, how to distribute the plan's income fairly to each doctor, and how to meld different approaches to practicing medicine. A physician-run plan can compete with managed care groups, but the task takes dedication, cooperation and cost containment. The experiences of doctor-led organizations in Sacramento, CA, and central Wisconsin are discussed.

MD raises ruckus by challenging specialty capitation
Article Abstract:
Ophthalmologist Dion R. Erlich challenged the imposition of a capitated payment plan by Keystone Health Plan East to limit specialty care costs by writing to 600 patients to get them to change health insurers. Many physicians groups, which see capitation payments as a threat to the quality of specialty care, supported Erlich's move. Others see it as a doomed attempt to forestall a system of payment which is necessitated by developments in the healthcare market.
