Article Abstract:
Ganciclovir is very effective in reducing the risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and drug resistance is so far not very common. All AIDS patients with CD4 cell counts below 100 and evidence of CMV in their blood or urine should be given ganciclovir to prevent CMV infection. If they should develop CMV infection during treatment, this does not necessarily mean the virus is resistant. However, they should be switched to foscarnet or cidofovir if they do not respond to ganciclovir. Eighty-three percent of viral gene mutations can be detected by the polymerase chain reaction.

Condoms and the transmission of cytomegalovirus
Article Abstract:
There is ample data to establish that the use of condoms can help prevent the spread of cytomegalovirus (CMV). The virus does not transmit in nonsexual ways. Close quarters and exposure does not increase transmission. Presence of the CMV antibody doubles during early sexually active years of 15 to 35. CMV has been found on the cervix of between 13% and 23% of women at clinics for diagnosis of possible venereal disease, and among promiscuous homosexual men, it is very common..
