Double indemnity
Article Abstract:
The Royal College of Midwives has had to pay damages of 840,000 pounds sterling to a boy born with cerebral palsy, after the home birth was badly managed by an independent midwife. The Royal College has decided not to continue to indemnify independent midwives because of the high costs and the Medical Defence Union is likely to raise the cost of premiums. An independent midwife currently has to pay premiums of up to 7,150 pounds sterling per year which is the same amount as an obstetrician has to pay. A list of facts about cerebral palsy is included.

Shotgun weddings
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom health secretary, Frank Dobson, is planning to merge National Health Service trusts and health authorities because there are too hospitals at the moment. Mergers will help to provide the money needed to meet the Labour Party's election promise of putting 100 million pounds sterling into patient care rather than into bureaucracy. Nurses and doctors will not lose their jobs because of the mergers, but there is concern that nurse managers might. A government white paper is expected in the Autumn and will clarify the merger plans .
