Prognostic factors in meningococcal disease: development of a bedside predictive model and scoring system
Article Abstract:
Hemorrhagic diathesis, focal neurologic signs and age 60 years or older may be signs of a poor prognosis in patients with meningococcal infections. These infections are caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. Researchers compared physical signs apparent at the clinical examination with mortality rates in 907 patients with meningococcal infections. Patients with the highest mortality rates were 60 or older, had muscle or sensory evidence of central nervous system damage and hemorrhagic diathesis. Hemorrhagic diathesis is characterized by spontaneous bleeding from mucous membranes and other sites.

Risk stratification and bedside prognostication in infective endocarditis
Article Abstract:
A study published in 2003 was able to identify several factors that affected the survival of patients with infective endocarditis. Patients with only one factor might benefit from drug therapy, but those with several factors might do better with an operation to replace the valve. Infective endocarditis is a bacterial infection inside the heart that usually affects the heart valves.
