Early transvaginal ultrasonography versus early cerclage in women with an unclear history of incompetent cervix
Article Abstract:
Cerclage does not appear to be more effective than periodic ultrasound imaging of the cervix for managing women with a possible history of cervical incompetence. Cervical incompetence means the cervix dilates too early in a pregnancy, causing premature birth. A cerclage is a loop of suture placed around the cervix to keep it closed. Ultrasound imaging is used to measure the cervix because a shorter than normal cervix is also a risk factor for premature birth.

Successful application of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation as lifesaving therapy for a patient with amniotic fluid embolism
Article Abstract:
Doctors discuss the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation to save the life of a pregnant woman who developed heart and lung failure from an amniotic fluid embolism. This occurs when amniotic fluid enters the mother's blood stream and causes anaphylactic shock. The mortality rate is 85%.

Fetal renal volume assessment by three-dimensional ultrasonography
Article Abstract:
Researchers have developed a formula that can estimate the three-dimensional volume of fetal kidneys using two-dimensional ultrasound. The formula consists of a constant multiplied by the largest anteroposterior diameter, the largest transverse diameter, and the largest longitudinal diameter.
