Effect of ethics consultations on nonbeneficial life-sustaining treatments in the intensive care setting: a randomized controlled trial
Article Abstract:
An ethics consultation can prevent critically ill patients from receiving expensive treatments that will not benefit them, according to a study of 551 patients in intensive care units in seven US hospitals. Among the patients who died in the ICU, an ethics consultation reduced the time they spent on life support. Doctors, nurses, and family members considered the ethics consultation to be very useful.

A social science perspective on gifts to physicians from industry
Article Abstract:
Social science research on the psychology of conflicts of interest is reviewed, particularly as it pertains to doctors who accept gifts from the pharmaceutical industry. Many doctors believe these gifts will not bias them in favor of a company's products, but social science research shows that it often does. Thus, the bias is unintentional and unconscious, and therefore may be harder to eliminate.

Use of race and ethnicity in biomedical publication
Article Abstract:
Seven guidelines are presented for researchers who publish studies about different ethnic groups. The aim of the guidelines is to account for the limitations of racial and ethnic data, to distinguish between ethnicity as a risk factor or a risk marker, and to avoid stigmatizing certain ethnic groups and contributing to the racial and ethnic division in society.
