Marital status in relation to Kaposi's sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and anal cancer in pre-AIDS era
Article Abstract:
Single men may have had an increased risk of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and a decreased risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma just before the AIDS epidemic, but an increased risk of anal cancer long before the epidemic. In the era of the epidemic, the risk of these diseases is known to be high in people with HIV infection and AIDS. Researchers reviewed demographic data on men who developed any of the above three diseases or other cancers before 1976. Never being married was used as a substitute for homosexuality. Data from 1940 to 1976 suggest that men with KS were equally likely to be single as married. However, data from 1973 to 1976 suggest that men with KS were four times more likely to be single than married. Data from 1940 to 1976 suggest that men with anal cancer were much more likely to be single than men with prostate or colon cancers. Thus, among homosexual men, the increased risk of KS and NHL may have began just before the AIDS epidemic, while the increased risk of anal cancer may have begun well before the epidemic.

Differences in susceptibility to AIDS development: a cohort study of Danish and American homosexual-bisexual men, 1981 to 1995
Article Abstract:
A small number of HIV patients may survive many years without progressing to AIDS. Researchers studied 201 homosexual and bisexual men with HIV. During the 15-year study, the annual risk of AIDS rose to a peak of 15% in the seventh year, then stabilized to an annual risk of 10% in the tenth year. Using several mathematical models, 10-13% of HIV infected patients may survive up to 25 years without developing AIDS. The best measure of progression to AIDS is a fall in CD4 T-cell count below 100 cells/micro-L.
