Effective solutions
Article Abstract:
Nurse leaders' claim that the National Health Service (NHS) is carrying out too much treatment that does not work was acknowledged by UK Health Sec Stephen Dorrell in Oct 1995. Dorrell told leading clinicians that the use of ineffective drug therapies and other practices must be identified and addressed, although he refused to accept the commonly held belief that under 20% of interventions are clinically proven to be beneficial. Meanwhile the King's Fund and the NHS Executive have launched a joint project designed to ensure that practice is based on research evidence.

Up in the air: pollution has been blamed for the rise in childhoold asthma, but the links are not as clearcut as they at first appear
Article Abstract:
Childhood asthmas rates have doubled during the past 20 years and the residents of Greenwich which has a high childhood asthma rate, are to take their council to the High Court because of its refusal to close congested roads during smoggy periods. Air pollution has also been further related to lung disease following studies claiming that air pollution causes 2-3% of overall deaths in nine cities. However some nurses believe that there is confusion over factors that exacerbate asthma and those that cause the condition.

Gulf of Mexico
Article Abstract:
Mexico's indigenous people are the most socially disadvantaged in the country. Their health is much worse than that of people who live in Mexico City, and they still live in a semi-feudal society. The World Health Organization has succeeded in improving life expectancy among these people, and vaccination programmes have reduced the incidence of certain diseases. However, there is still a great deal of work to be done, and there is an urgent need to train more nurses.
