Child malnutrition in poor smallholder households in rural Kenya: an in-depth situation analysis
Article Abstract:
There is a seasonal influence on nutrition among preschool children from poor families in rural Kenya. Considerable difference between the lean period (May to October) and post-harvest months (January-February) is observed in the intake of calcium, vitamin A, thiamin and riboflavin. Stunting occurred in 51% of the children during the lean season, and in 28% during the post-harvest period. The study involved 22 girls and 19 boys aged between 18 to 36 months. Using pre-coded questionnaires, data were collected at intervals over a period of 14 months.

Report of the working group on energy requirements for pregnancy and lactation
Article Abstract:
Research studies on energy requirements for pregnant and lactating mothers are evaluated. The two methods for calculating the energy needs of these mothers are by summation of measured or estimated energy costs and by considering the average energy intakes in healthy pregnant women. The 1985 principles governing the computation of the energy needs of lactating mothers are found to be suitable.
