Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
Article Abstract:
A skin biopsy may be more important in diagnosing Ehlers-Danlos syndrome than genetic testing. This syndrome causes excessive bruising and scarring, fragile skin, hypermobile joints, and susceptibility to osteoarthritis. One form, type IV Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, can cause death if an artery or organ ruptures. Because it often affects blood vessels, it is called vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. A mutation in the gene for type III procollagen causes this syndrome and different mutations in the same gene can cause different symptoms. The overall result is an abnormal form of type III collagen, which can be detected in skin biopsies.
