Patent cardiac foramen ovale: stroke risk and closure
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to determine whether closing a foramen ovale can reduce the risk of stroke. A study published in 2003 found that it did, but there are many other causes of stroke. Other studies have shown that a foramen ovale increases the risk of stroke, but not the risk of subsequent strokes. A foramen ovale is an opening in the heart that is present in the unborn baby but normally closes after birth.

Microalbuminuria increases risk for heart attacks and strokes in hypertensive patients
Article Abstract:
People with high blood pressure who also have a protein called albumin in their urine have a greater than normal risk of having a heart attack or stroke, according to a study of 8,206 patients. Albumin does not normally occur in urine, and when it does, this is often a sign that the kidneys are not functioning properly. This may be the first time albumin in the urine has been linked to cardiovascular disease.
