Empowerment or social control? Differing interpretations of psychology in health education
Article Abstract:
Psychology can be useful in health education by allowing individuals to gain more control over their own lives. Psychology should not be used as a method of social control in health education. Health educators should question the rationale behind programs and be critical of underlying assumptions. They should beware of becoming complacent in professional and intellectual terms and avoid attempts to turn them into agents geared to exercise social control on the public.

Improving written patient education materials: a review of the evidence
Article Abstract:
Patients need good quality information in order to take care of themselves, and this need is increasingly important with the trend of shorter stays in hospital. Material is often out of date and may not be comprehensible to patients. Typefaces should be chosen which are easy to read and illustrations should be used. Pilot studies can be carried out in order to gain feedback from patients. Software can be used but it is preferable to have comments from real people.

How are written patient-education materials used in out-patient clinics? Insight from rheumatology
Article Abstract:
In 1994/95, the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council (ARC) spent over 250,000 pounds sterling on the production and distribution of over 1.5 million leaflets. The leaflets are distributed at GP surgeries, hospitals, and directly to patients. A study of how such literature is used in rheumatology out-patient clinics has revealed that it is generally poorly displayed and in some cases, out of date.
