Entree into world of managed care; single-specialty physician networks are expanding
Article Abstract:
Single-specialty physician networks are increasing their coverage across the US as physicians having medical specialties strive to compete in a managed care environment. Networks encompass specialties from cardiology, ob-gyn care, and radiology services to oncology and ophthalmology. The networks offer an advantage to specialists over physician-hospital organizations (PHOs) in that in these networks are all on an equal footing, alleviating the problem of competition with primary care physicians encountered in PHOs.

Measuring outcomes: tracking patient response to resource use can help make managed care pay
Article Abstract:
Group medical practices have begun using outcomes assessment as a way to reduce medical costs and structure best-practice guidelines. The trend towards managed care forces physicians to evaluate each test ordered, each procedure performed and each drug prescribed. The formalized collection of clinical outcomes data allows physicians to impartially compare the performance of each group member and communicate and learn from each other in a more efficient manner.
