Ethical code desired by public health practitioners
Article Abstract:
The American Public Health Association (APHA) is the largest and oldest health care organization in the country, with a current membership of 39,000. A recent survey of 10 percent of its membership found that over 97 percent thought ethical considerations were important, and over 90 percent were interested in having a code of professional ethics established for the APHA. The public health profession has never had such a code, and is the only major health profession which lacks one. It is believed that a profession's standards of conduct and the guidelines for monitoring and enforcing such standards helps define the very stature of a profession. More people from for-profit businesses seemed interested in having a set of ethical guidelines than from non-profit organizations. This may be because the very nature of for-profit health care is perceived by some to be unethical. The results of the survey were presented at the last APHA annual meeting and met with much agreement by APHA members. The discussion of this issue will continue within the profession. Code team hazards
Article Abstract:
Members of hospital resuscitation teams, also known as code teams, face unique physical, environmental, and psychological hazards. Code team members report a high rate of puncture wounds, sprains and low back strain. Chemical and environmental hazards are common due to the urgent nature of resuscitation. Excessive stimulant use and chemical dependence is higher for code team members than for most medical staff.
