Evaluating the outcome of surgery for pelvic organ prolapse
Article Abstract:
The American Urogynecology Society and the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons have developed guidelines for surgeons who publish studies of the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse. Surgeons should adequately describe the nature of the anatomical abnormality and the surgical technique used to correct it. Objective tests should be used to assess the outcome, including pelvic imaging, urinary stress tests and intestinal transit times. All postoperative complications should be noted as well as operating time, blood loss and length of hospital stay. Costs should be included and quality of life should be assessed with standard questionnaires.

Two questionnaires that measure the impact of urinary incontinence on a woman's life may not be valid in women who have subjective complaints but no objective evidence of urinary incontinence. This was the conclusion of a study of the short and long forms of the Incontinence Impact Questionnaire and the Urogenital Distress Inventory.
