Emergency medicine
Article Abstract:
The Food and Drug Administration in 1996 revised the informed consent guidelines to allow physicians to enroll critically ill patients in trials of various treatments without the patient's consent. Emergency physicians have proposed new guidelines to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act of 1986 to ensure that patients seen in the emergency room are adequately treated. Diagnosing heart attack may be more effective now that many emergency departments are developing chest pain evaluation centers. Emergency physicians are becoming involved in efforts to prevent violent injuries.

Meeting of managerial science with medicine: the pace quickens
Article Abstract:
The principles of management science can be used to reduce excessive ordering of radiological diagnostic tests. Management science applies the scientific method to test innovative ideas in business. It was used to study whether a radiology consultant-gatekeeper could reduce the number of diagnostic tests. There was no reduction in test orders despite the fact that the consultant had to approve all orders. Unnecessary diagnostic tests can increase health care costs, and managed care organizations use utilization review to reduce these costs.
