Expression and localization of matrilysin, a matrix metalloproteinase, in human endometrium during the reproductive cycle
Article Abstract:
Variations in the expression of the gene for matrilysin during the menstrual cycle suggest that it plays an important role in regulating the endometrium of the uterus. Matrilysin belongs to a family of metal-ion requiring enzymes that are thought to effect the shedding of the endometrial lining during menstruation. Using RNA and tissue analysis, endometrial expression of matrilysin was determined in tissue samples obtained following biopsies, hysterectomies and pregnancies. Matrilysin was expressed in the proliferative, late secretory and menstrual periods but was not expressed during the early and mid secretory periods. That is, matrilysin is expressed during the two phases of the menstrual cycle in which the endometrium undergoes structural changes. It appears to be expressed more during the tissue breakdown of the late secretory and menstrual periods than during the tissue build-up of the proliferative phase.

Menstrual cycle-associated regulation of anabolic and catabolic enzymes causes luteal phase-characteristic expression of sulfatide in human endometrium
Article Abstract:
The sulfoglycolipid sulfatide may be found in greater amounts during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle than during the follicular phase. Researchers analyzed the metabolism and expression of sulfoglycolipids during the menstrual cycle. Sulfatide expression in the uterine lining was more than 10 times greater during the luteal phase than during the follicular phase. Sulfotransferase activity was 4.5 times higher during the luteal phase and arylsulfatase A activity was inhibited. Sulfatide may act as a receptor for a substance in the human embryo to aid the implantation process and determine the implantation site.

Endothelin-1 and big endothelin-1 increase in human endometrium during menstruation
Article Abstract:
Endothelin-1 may be produced by human uterine tissue and may influence the menstrual cycle. Endothelin is a substance that causes blood vessels to constrict. Researchers used radioimmunoassay analysis to measure levels of endothelin-1 and big endothelin-1 in the tissues of 60 uteruses after hysterectomy. The inner layer of the uterus contained more of both types of endothelin-1 than did the muscular layer. This increase was evident in the premenstrual and menstrual phases of the menstrual cycle.
