Extremely preterm birth -- defining the limits of hope
Article Abstract:
Studies on the prognosis of premature babies can provide information for pregnant women who deliver prematurely. In a study published in 2000, half the babies born before 25 weeks' gestation had some disability at 30 months, and about one-fourth had a severe disability.

Neurologic and development disability at six years of age after extremely preterm birth
Article Abstract:
A study done reveals that adverse cognitive sequelae are more frequent outcome among more mature preterm populations. The cognitive impairments explain the educational difficulties that exist for extremely low-birth-weight children.

Many premature babies will have moderate to severe disability when they grow up. In a study of 283 children born at 25 weeks' gestation or earlier, 49% had some disability at the age of 30 months, and 23% had a severe disability.
