FCER undertakes federal funding project
Article Abstract:
The chiropractic profession has experienced much growth and many successes over the past two decades, but it continues to lag behind in federal funding for its research and education efforts. To evaluate this situation, the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) recently hired a Washington-based health care consulting firm, the Corporate Health Policies Group. This firm will undertake a 15-month study called ''An Evaluation of Federal Funding Policies and Programs and Their Relationship to the Chiropractic Profession.'' Hopefully, this study will identify sources of available funding and what the profession needs to do to secure it. Suggestions for how the profession can increase available funding for research and development will also be included. Finally, a review of any barriers to obtaining present and future funding for the chiropractic profession will be outlined. This funding is primarily intended to reach the chiropractic colleges, to be used towards their research goals and efforts. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Are the Federal and State Governments Complying With the Synar Amendment?
Article Abstract:
Many states have not prohibited the sale of tobacco to minors and the Department of Health and Human Services is not penalizing them as mandated by the Synar Amendment. This amendment was enacted by Congress in 1992 and required all states to pass laws forbidding the sale of tobacco to minor. Any states that refused to comply would receive no block grants from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Researchers analyzed 1997 substance abuse block grant applications 59 states and territories. Nineteen failed to meet the requirements of the Synar Amendment but none were sanctioned by DHHS.
