Familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (codon 200 mutation) with supranuclear palsy
Article Abstract:
A form of familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) characterized by supranuclear gaze palsy, or palsy affecting the eyes, may be caused by a mutation in the amyloid gene on chromosome 20. Familial CJD is an inherited disease of the brain characterized by progressive dementia and other neurological complications. A genetic analysis was done of two patients who died from CJD and nine healthy individuals at risk for CJD from a family with a history of CJD with supranuclear gaze palsy. Both of the patients who died and four at-risk individuals had an identical mutation in codon 200 of the amyloid gene on chromosome 20. Nine individuals from this family died after developing progressive dementia characteristic of CJD. Five individuals were diagnosed with supranuclear gaze palsy after an eye examination.

The risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy ('mad cow disease') to human health
Article Abstract:
The US has already instituted several regulations to prevent the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to humans. BSE is a degenerative brain disease in cows that is thought to have originated from the identical form of the disease in sheep, which is called scrapie. This may have occurred because sheep meat and bones were fed to cattle. In Britain, 21 people have developed a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which is a human disease similar to BSE. There have been no cases of this variant in the US and no cases of BSE in US cattle. The US has banned the importation of cattle products and the use of animal products in cattle feed.

Hope for perinatal prevention of cerebral palsy
Article Abstract:
Two studies published in 2003 shed light on possible ways of preventing cerebral palsy. One showed that giving pregnant women in labor magnesium sulfate might lower the risk of cerebral palsy in their baby. The other found that a uterine infection called chorioamnionitis may be a risk factor for cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a disabling disease that can have drastic effects on families and society in general.
