Fatal outcome of human influenza A (H5N1) is associated with high viral load and hypercytokinemia
Article Abstract:
Virological and immunological studies were performed in 18 individuals with avian influenza A (H5N1) and 8 individuals infected with human influenza virus subtypes to assess the relevance of H5N1 viruses, which cause severe disease in humans. The Observations point to a central role for high viral burden in the pathogenesis of human H5N1 disease and suggest that timely suppression of viral replication should remain the mainstay for treatment of influenza H5N1.

Oseltamivir resistance during treatment of influenza A (H5N1) infection
Article Abstract:
The isolation of oseltamivir-resistant influenza A (H5N1) variants from two patients who died of the infection, in one case despite the early initiation treatment is reported. Results reveal that the surviving patients had rapid declines in the vital load to undetectable levels during treatment suggesting that resistance could emerge during the recommended regimen of oseltamivir therapy and might be associated with clinical deterioration.

Fatal avian influenza A (H5N1) in a child presenting with diarrhea followed by coma
Article Abstract:
A four-year-old in southern Vietnam presented with severe diarrhea, followed by seizures, coma and death. The patient was diagnosed with avian influenza A (H5N1), acute encephalitis, by isolating the virus from cerebrospinal fluid, fecal, throat, and serum specimens.
