Fatal reaction
Article Abstract:
About one person in 200 is allergic to peanuts, and some of these people go into anaphylactic shock, which is a life-threatening condition. Eating, or coming into contact with an allergen, results in histamine being released by cells and this cause skin wheals, an itchy nose, cramp, diarrhoea, problems with breathing, and collapse. Immediate treatment with adrenaline is essential. Peanut allergy appears to be linked to a family history of allergies and the Anaphylaxis Campaign suggests that exposure of young children to high-risk substances could increase their susceptibility.

Legionnaires' legacy
Article Abstract:
Infection with legionnaires' disease, a form of pneumonia which was first recognised in 1977, is almost always by inhalation of minute droplets of water containing enough of the baterium. It is a particular danger to middle-aged to elderly people, although even very young children can be infected. It is more common in men than in women, and is also seen more frequently in people who have cancer, kidney failure, chronic respiratory disease or alcoholism. If untreated, the fatality rate is around 20%.

Latex sensation - what causes it and what can be done to minimise the risks
Article Abstract:
The increased use of latex in household and hospital products has led to a rise in number of people suffering from latex sensitization. The risks of becoming sensitive to latex can be reduced by avoiding the use of powered latex gloves, assessing levels of sensitivity and note any skin irritation immediately. Nurses should be aware of any patients who are latex sensitive as the patient could sue for negligence if an invasive procedure was performed.
