Favorable hemodynamic effects of magnesium sulfate in preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
Rapid intravenous infusion of magnesium sulfate may cause a rapid decrease in blood vessel resistance and an increase in heart output in pregnant women with preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy involving hypertension and protein in the urine, and magnesium sulfate is a standard treatment. Researchers compared the effect of magnesium sulfate on blood circulation in 15 women with preeclampsia to its effect on 11 women with preterm labor. Only preeclamptic women experienced a rapid drop in blood vessel resistance, an increase in heart output, and changes in heart rate lasting for four hours or more. One-time injection of magnesium sulfate briefly affected blood circulation in women with preterm labor.

Hemodynamic effects of oral nifedipine in preeclamptic hypertensive emergencies
Article Abstract:
Nifedipine appears to be an effective treatment in controlling high blood pressure in patients with preeclampsia. Researchers evaluated blood pressure changes and other indexes of heart function in 10 patients with preeclampsia and high blood pressure who were more than 24 weeks along in their pregnancies. Arterial blood pressure measurements dropped from 133 millimeters mercury (mm Hg) to 100 mm Hg over four hours following treatment with nifedipine. There were no significant changes in the mothers' or babies' heart rates.

Effect of fetal presentation on the amniotic fluid index
Article Abstract:
Turning a baby in a breech birth around so its head comes out first rather than its feet appears to increase the amniotic fluid index. The amniotic fluid index is a quick way of estimating the amount of amniotic fluid in the uterus.
