Federal report: Oregon Medicaid plan may cost more than expected
Article Abstract:
Oregon's plan for Medicaid has been analyzed by the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), which reports that the plan would involve an extra $100 million of federal payments over a five-year period. Oregon cannot proceed with the plan unless the federal government grants a waiver. OTA's report makes no recommendation for granting or denying the waiver. The plan, which extends coverage to residents with income lower than the poverty level, would at first limit benefits to a list of 587 types of disease conditions.

Federal TB money not enough, Medicaid official says
Article Abstract:
Dr. Jerry Zellinger, adviser to the US Health Care Financing Administration Medicaid Bureau, calls the administration's proposal of $66 million for tuberculosis (TB) control programs at Centers for Disease Control inadequate. The states can provide Medicaid services for TB care, but many poor people will be ineligible for Medicaid. Zellinger warned that TB may become a major epidemic, especially the multidrug-resistant strains. One task force estimated that prevention and treatment costs could total $470 million.

AIDS costs - one more reason for health reform
Article Abstract:
The cost of treating AIDS and HIV patients is much higher than previously supposed. AIDS Cost and Utilization Survey data estimate the cost of treating an AIDS patient over a one-year period at $38,000. For an HIV patient the cost is $10,000. These estimates do not include testing, education and counseling services. Costly drugs also contribute to the problem. For example, three 7,000-unit doses of the drug Procrit cost $600.
